Did you know that doTERRA’s essential oils make a delicious, natural, toxin-free flavouring for both sweet and savoury foods? When using these Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) essential oils in food, a little goes a very long way and often one drop (or less) is all you need! For example, when using doTERRA’s Oregano essential oil, it is often enough to just dip a toothpick in the hole and then swirl the toothpick through the food. In Wholefood Simply’s delicious healthy Peppermint Fudge recipe, you will only need 4-7 drops (not the 1/2 tsp that the recipe calls for when using Peppermint extract!). Is it safe to use doTERRA’s essential oils in food?

doTERRA’s rigorous testing standards ensure that their essential oils contain no chemical or pesticide residues, and no synthetic fillers. Their CPTG standard far exceeds the low standards globally for essential oils to be labelled “food grade”. When you buy something that is “mint” flavoured, you are likely either consuming an essential oil (or something called an essential oil) that has not been strictly tested for purity and may contain chemicals, pesticides and synthetic fillers. Or you are consuming an artificial flavour which of course is primarily chemicals that have repeatedly been shown to have adverse effects on our health.

Using doTERRA’s essential oils in food not only provides delicious flavour, the therapeutic properties of the essential oils can also provide support for the body. For example, Peppermint essential oil is well known for it’s ability to support digestion, and citrus oils such as Wild Orange or Lemon are known for their ability to support detoxification.

Recipe Inspiration

I’m a real lover of food – I love to cook it (I love others cooking it even more!) and I love to eat it, however, creating recipes is not my forte. Today there is so much recipe inspiration on the internet that I personally don’t feel called to creating my own recipes. So I’ve compiled a list of my favourite recipes (created by other people) for using doTERRA’s essential oils in, as well as a list of the doTERRA oils I love to incorporate into our meals.

Bianca from Wholefood Simply is one of my absolute faves for healthy wholefood treats. doTERRA’s essential oils can be used in so many of her recipes, just remember that you will need FAR less Peppermint oil than the recipe calls for when using doTERRA’s oils! Here’s a few ideas to get you started:

Essential Oils in Everyday Recipes:

  • Lemon essential oil is a delicious addition to any vanilla cake or cookie recipe. Our favourite wholefood cupcake recipe is this one by Jude Blereau which Alexx Stuart has also included a gluten-free adaptation for. Lemon oil also lifts homemade guacamole or hommus to a whole new level (1-3 drops is generally enough depending on the size of the bowl).
  • Wild Orange essential oil is a lovely addition to any bliss ball recipe, especially ones that include chocolate for that gorgeous Jaffa flavour. Lots of great healthy bliss ball recipes here.
  • Lime essential oil gives unrivalled zing to homemade guacamole and a couple of drops in your favourite alcoholic beverage is heavenly…think Gin, Lime oil and Soda or Vodka, Lime Oil and Soda. You’ll have the added detoxification support from the citrus oil too which is a bonus!
  • Cardamom essential oil is divine in curries and just as delectable in raw chocolate treats when paired with Wild Orange oil. I love knowing that I’m not going to chomp down on a stray cardamom pod in my bowl of curry too!
  • Coriander essential oil is a real winner in asian-inspired dishes when you don’t have the fresh herb on hand.
  • Oregano essential oil works so well in Italian dishes but beware… one drop is often too much of this potent oil so simply stick a toothpick in the top of the bottle and then swirl it through the pot.
  • Black Pepper essential oil works well in just about any savoury dish, especially dips like guacamole.
  • Rosemary essential oil is delicious mixed with your roasting oil of choice (we love organic coconut oil or organic tallow) and massaged into your veggies before roasting…one drop of essential oil is more than enough for a large tray of roast veggies.
